The Hollywood in Dubai project is a precollege experience aimed at students between 14 and 17 years old. The aim of the program is not solely to introduce students to the fundamentals of cinematography but to teach them the skills necessary to working in a team in a creative environment.
Classes will be held in person at the site of Italiacamp over the course of the 19th and 20th of April weekend. The lessons will be structured in two daily sessions, from 9 am to 5 pm. Students are taught the principles of dramatic writing and how to write a screenplay by a professional screenwriter. Subsequently, the instructor will divide students into groups of 3-5 and assign the writing guidelines and the respective sets where their scripts will be filmed.
During the following months each group will receive up to 20 hours of online tutoring during which they will be assisted and guided by a screenwriter throughout the entire process of writing a single scene. These meetings are meant to monitor the project's progress and ensure its completion. The final one-page document will be used as the basis for filming the scene in a studio production in Dubai.
At Italiacamp’s site, students receive a cinematography class on June 13th afternoon. On June 14th each crew will film the scene on its respective set and on June 15th there will be postproduction class, where the students will learn how to edit the scene.
The work should not only demonstrate that the students have learned the basics of writing but, more importantly, that each student has shown the ability to work as a team, to divide roles and tasks, to argue their positions, and to change their minds if a teammate presents a better perspective, or to collaborate and mediate to reach a compromise in cases of creative and personal differences.
